An Evening in Korea

For someone whose days are booked and whose evenings are not.

6:30 PM – 10:30 PM · four hours, one neighbourhood

Three evenings. Pick the one that sounds like you.

Same shape every time — four hours, one neighbourhood, dinner you order yourself, and the hour where we actually talk. What changes is which Seoul you want: the loud one, the old one, or the quiet one.

This is the night I’d take a friend on if they landed at four in the afternoon and had one evening: a whole neighbourhood, done properly, and home by eleven.

Hongdae

홍대 · The Loud One

For a first night in Seoul, and for anyone who wants the version their friends back home will ask about.

홍대 · The Loud One

A sample shape. Each day gets built around what you want to practise.

01

6:30

Warm-up

거리구경

Hongdae on foot. Street-wandering and a little shopping, to warm up and get your ear in before anyone expects you to say anything.

02

7:00

Food

Dinner

닭갈비 and 막걸리, at the kind of place locals actually eat rather than the one with the English sign. You order it. Don’t eat pork, don’t drink? Tell me and I’ll pick somewhere else.

03

8:00

Photos

인생네컷

The photo booths. Four frames, badly posed, and the strip is yours to take home. On me.

04

8:30

Karaoke

노래방

Where the night turns. On me. Not a singer? Say so when we book and we’ll spend the hour in the 오락실 arcade two doors down instead — same energy, no microphone.

05

9:30

Talk

Café

Coffee, and the part of the evening where we actually talk. A little Korean, and the questions about this country you haven’t been able to ask anyone.

06

10:10

Walk

술집거리

A last walk down the bar street with the city fully lit, and I put you on your train.

We meet in Hongdae. I’ll send the exact spot a few days before.
